Everyday Makeup Routine in 5 Minutes: Simple Steps with LUMIMI

Everyday Makeup Routine in 5 Minutes: Simple Steps with LUMIMI

Updated 2026-10-24Reading time 12 min

An everyday makeup routine can take around five minutes with practice – once your skincare and sunscreen have settled – if you know what order to work in and what not to do. All it takes is prepping your skin, evening out your tone with a thin layer, covering what still shows and defining your brows and lips. Here you will find a step-by-step everyday makeup routine with rough timings, a quick version for rushed mornings and the mistakes that make makeup look heavy.

In short
  • Everyday makeup in 5 minutes once your skincare has settled: a thin layer of foundation, concealer only where needed, brows and lips.
  • A thin base and a few dots of concealer look more natural than one thick layer all over the face.
  • When you are in a rush, you can skip any makeup step you don’t need that morning – keep your usual skincare and sun protection. The quickest version is under-eye concealer, brushed-up brows and lip gloss.
  • Fill in only the gaps in your brows, and for lips one or two products are enough: liner, gloss or lipstick.
  • Apply foundation only once your moisturiser has sunk in, and check colours in daylight.

Everyday makeup routine in 5 minutes: step by step

A 5-minute everyday makeup routine comes down to skin prep followed by four short makeup steps: tone, spot concealing, brows and lips. Each step adds just what is needed, so you avoid piling several products over the same area.

The timings are approximate. The first time will take longer, but after a week the movements become almost automatic.

  1. Prep your skin (before the five minutes start)

Cleanse your face and apply a thin layer of your usual moisturiser, plus a separate sunscreen in the morning. While it sinks in (2–3 min), brush your hair or have your coffee. The five-minute estimate covers makeup application only, not cleansing, moisturiser or sunscreen – but this step is still worth not skipping.

Common mistake: applying foundation over moisturiser that is still slippery. The foundation then slides, gathers around the nose and goes on patchy. Touch your cheek with a finger: if the skin no longer feels tacky or slippery, you can carry on.

  2. A thin layer of cushion or foundation (1–1.5 min)

If you use a cushion, press the puff lightly into the cushion once or twice and pat from the centre of the face – cheeks, nose, forehead and chin – outwards. With liquid foundation, place a drop on each cheek, your forehead, nose and chin and blend with light circular movements using your fingers, a sponge or a brush. Along the jaw, just blend the edges – there is no need to cover your neck.

Common mistake: applying a thick layer all over “to make sure it covers”. A heavy layer settles into fine lines faster and looks like a mask. Whatever still shows will be covered in the next step.

Press the puff briefly and lift – this spreads the foundation more thinly than sweeping it.
  3. Concealer only where it still shows (about 1 min)

Look in the mirror and find what is still visible through your foundation: usually darkness under the eyes, redness around the sides of the nose or the odd mark. Place 2–3 small dots of concealer there and tap in with a fingertip or sponge, blending the edges into your foundation.

Common mistake: using concealer as a second foundation – in a heavy under-eye layer or all over the face. Use a few small dots where discolouration shows instead: concealer is usually more pigmented than foundation, and a heavy layer under the eyes quickly creases. To learn how to choose the shade and apply it in dots, see our guide on how to use concealer for under-eyes and redness.

Three dots of concealer under the eye with a gold-tipped applicator beside them
Three small dots on the darkest spot are usually enough for each eye.
  4. Brows: brush up and fill in the gaps (about 1 min)

Use the spoolie to brush the hairs upwards and slightly towards the temple – that way you can see where colour is really missing. With the fine tip of the pencil, fill in only those gaps using short, hair-like strokes in the direction of growth, then brush through again to soften the colour. If your pencil has no spoolie, a clean brow brush will do.

Common mistake: a shade that is too dark and a solid line along the whole brow – the brows then look drawn on. For a natural result, choose a shade that matches your brow hairs and overall hair colour, and if in doubt, pick the softer shade – it is easier to build up. You will find the hair-stroke technique in our article on how to fill in eyebrows with a pencil.

  5. Lips: liner, gloss or lipstick (30 s – 1 min)

Choose one of three options. Gloss on its own is the quickest. Lip liner blended inwards over the lips if you want more colour and a more defined shape. Liner with gloss or lipstick on top if you have another half a minute. Apply lipstick from the centre of the lips out to the corners.

Common mistake: an unblended outline that is much darker than your lips. Once the gloss wears off, a hard line is left. Gently blend the outline inwards with the liner’s brush or your fingertip; to find out when to choose which combination, read our comparison lip gloss or lipstick.

Tip

Keep all your products in one place, in the order you use them. When you don’t have to hunt for anything, five minutes stays five minutes.

What to skip when you’re in a rush: a 3-minute quick makeup routine

When you are in a rush, you can skip any makeup step you don’t need that morning – the routine works with just two or three. Keep your usual skincare and sun protection regardless.

  • When your skin tone is even: a few dots of concealer under the eyes and on any redness, brushed-up brows and gloss. Takes about 3 min.
  • When your tone is uneven and time is short: a thin layer of cushion, brushed-up brows and lip liner or gloss. Also about 3 min.

Each step has a simple sign that you may not need it today:

StepWithHow longWhen you can skip it
1. SkinYour usual moisturiser, plus sunscreen in the morningAbout 1 min + waiting time (not counted in the 5 min)Best not to skip moisturiser – just apply it first
2. ToneCushion or liquid foundation1–1.5 minWhen your skin tone looks even without foundation
3. ConcealingConcealerAbout 1 minWhen neither under-eye darkness nor redness shows through your foundation
4. BrowsBrow pencil with spoolieAbout 1 minWhen your brows are full – then brushing them is enough
5. LipsLip liner, gloss or lipstick30 s – 1 minWhen gloss or your usual lip balm is all you need

What matters most is not the number of steps but a routine you find easy to repeat every day.

If you have a few extra minutes

Any extra 2–3 minutes are better spent not on a thicker layer but on details that make your face look fresher and more polished.

  • Powder only on the T-zone. If your forehead, nose or chin get shiny during the day, lightly powder them. Don’t powder your cheeks and under-eyes heavily – there powder tends to emphasise skin texture.
  • A touch of colour on the cheeks. Tap a drop of cream blush onto the apples of your cheeks and blend towards the temples with your fingers or a dense domed brush.
  • A second thin layer – just in spots. If redness around the nose still shows, wait a minute and cover it again, but only there.
  • Lashes. If you like, curl them or apply mascara – your eyes will look brighter even without eyeshadow.
  • Lip liner all over. Fill in your whole lips with liner, blend and add gloss on top – the colour will be richer than gloss alone.
  • A check by the window. In daylight, look at your jawline, the edges of your concealer and your brows: are there any visible edges or areas that are too dark?

Cushion or liquid foundation: which is easier in the morning?

When you are short on time in the morning, a cushion is usually more convenient, while liquid foundation is better when you want more control over the amount and the option to build up more coverage. Both work for this routine as long as you apply them thinly.

  • Cushion. The puff and mirror are already in the compact, so you don’t need a brush, and touch-ups are convenient when you are out. Coverage is usually light to medium.
  • Liquid foundation. Easy to dose drop by drop and apply with fingers, a sponge or a brush, adding a second layer where you need more coverage.

The LUMIMI cushion foundation comes in two shades: Bare Natural and Soft Bronze. Its colour doesn’t adapt to your skin, so check the shade on your jawline in daylight. The pack contains a 15 g cushion and a 15 g refill.

The LUMIMI colour-changing foundation looks white in the bottle: its pigments are held in microcapsules that release as you blend, revealing a tone designed for fair and medium skin. It isn’t designed for deeper skin tones. Both foundations contain fragrance, so if your skin is sensitive, try a new product on a small area first.

You can read more about the format in our guide on what a cushion foundation is and how to use it, and about choosing a texture in our article on how to choose foundation for your skin type.

The most common mistakes that make natural everyday makeup look heavy

Quick makeup is usually spoilt not by the products but by using too much, rushing and choosing the wrong shades.

  • Moisturiser that hasn’t sunk in. Foundation slides and gathers in streaks. Apply moisturiser first and give it a few minutes.
  • Too thick a layer of foundation. During the day it emphasises dry patches and fine lines. A thin layer and a few dots of concealer work better.
  • Concealer all over the face. It is meant for areas that still show through foundation. All over, it looks flat and heavy.
  • A shade chosen in the bathroom. Artificial light distorts colours, so a line at the neck or pale half-moons under the eyes only show up outdoors. Check your makeup by a window at least once.
  • Brows that are too dark and drawn in solid. They become the most noticeable feature on your face. Fill in only the gaps and soften the colour with the spoolie.
  • Rubbing instead of tapping. Rubbing wipes off the layer you have just applied, leaving it patchy. Tap in foundation and concealer.
  • A dirty sponge or brush. Foundation goes on unevenly. Wash your cushion puff regularly, and wash and dry your brush once product builds up on it.

LUMIMI products for this routine: what to use for each step

For an everyday look, choose one base product, concealer where needed, a brow pencil and one lip product – and all the tips work with other products too. We covered the cushion and the colour-changing foundation above; for the other steps:

  • Universal Concealer for the Face and Under-Eye Area. A 7.5 ml bottle with a dispenser and a gold-tipped applicator. The LUMIMI concealer is highly pigmented, so start with a tiny amount. It contains squalane, olive oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E, and is free from fragrance and alcohol. Both shades are light – Nude Beige and Warm Ivory – so it is better suited to lighter skin.
  • Eyebrow pencil. A twist-up pencil with an ultra-fine tip for hair-like strokes and a spoolie at the other end, so both parts of step four are done with one tool. Shades: Midnight Black, Mocha Brown, Coffee Brown and Dark Brown.
  • Lip liner. Twist-up and double-ended, with a soft brush at the other end for blending the outline. Use it to line your lips or fill them in completely. Four shades – from Dusty Rose to Toasted Almond.
  • Non-sticky lip gloss. Wear it on its own or over liner or lipstick. Shades range from the clear Crystal Clear to the richer Red Spice and Cherry Kiss.
  • Lipstick. A creamy texture with almost full coverage – for when you want stronger colour in a single layer.

Frequently asked questions about everyday makeup

Do I need to use all five products?

No. Start with what you actually need: every makeup step can be skipped. Some people only need concealer and gloss, while for others an even tone and groomed brows matter most. Choose the steps you find easy to repeat every day.

What order should I apply everyday makeup in?

Usually: moisturiser, foundation or cushion, concealer, brows, lips. Apply concealer after foundation, because foundation already evens out some unevenness and you will need less concealer. Leave brows and lips until last so you don’t accidentally smudge foundation over them.

Can I do everyday makeup without foundation?

Yes. If your skin tone is fairly even, a few dots of concealer under the eyes and on any redness, brushed-up brows and gloss are enough. It is the quickest way to a natural look.

Can foundation replace sunscreen?

No. The LUMIMI cushion and colour-changing foundation are not sunscreen products. In the morning, apply a separate sunscreen first and put your foundation on once it has absorbed.

What can I do if my makeup gets shiny during the day?

First, gently blot the shiny areas with a tissue, then touch up. You can powder an oilier T-zone, and where foundation has worn off, pat on a thin layer of cushion. Don’t add a new layer over shiny skin, as it will gather.

Is this routine suitable for mature skin?

Yes – just pay more attention to hydration and quantity. Apply moisturiser a few minutes earlier, foundation more thinly and concealer in small dots, and use very little or no powder under the eyes. Match your brow shade to the colour of your remaining brow hairs.
