Cushion Foundation: What It Is, How It Differs and How to Apply It

A cushion foundation is liquid foundation in a compact. The formula sits in a porous cushion and you apply it with a separate puff, so it is easy to carry in your bag and quick to even out your skin tone. Here you will find how a cushion differs from regular foundation and powder, who it suits, how to apply it step by step, how to pick your shade and how to look after the puff.

In short
  • A cushion is a foundation, not a powder: a liquid formula held in a porous cushion and applied with a puff.
  • It usually gives light-to-medium, natural-looking coverage that you can build up where you need it.
  • Apply thin layers, pressing from the centre of the face outwards – don’t rub the puff across your skin.
  • A cushion’s shade doesn’t adapt to your skin, so test it on your jawline in daylight.
  • Wash the puff regularly (a few times a week if you wear makeup daily) and close the compact tightly after every use.

What is a cushion foundation?

A cushion foundation is a format of foundation: instead of sitting in a bottle, the liquid foundation is held in a porous cushion inside a compact. You apply it with a separate soft puff – press the puff into the cushion, then pat it onto your skin.

The format took off in Korean beauty and spread quickly because it lets you do your base in a few minutes without brushes or messy fingers. Most compacts have a mirror, so a cushion is also handy for touch-ups during the day.

To avoid confusion later, two words: the cushion is the foundation-soaked sponge inside the compact, and the puff is the applicator you use to apply it. Because of the compact, you may also see the term “cushion powder”, but most cushion foundations – LUMIMI’s included – contain a liquid formula, not a dry powder.

Cushion vs liquid foundation vs powder: the differences

A cushion differs from liquid foundation less in formula and more in packaging and application. From powder it is fundamentally different: powder is dry and mostly used to set makeup or absorb shine.

Cushion or foundation – which should you choose?

A cushion is a foundation, so what you are really choosing is the format. Go for a cushion if you want a quick, natural result and something easy to carry. Choose foundation in a bottle if you like applying with a brush, want more control over the amount or need stronger coverage.

If you are still working out which formula suits your skin, read how to choose foundation for your skin type.

Who cushion foundation suits best – and who it suits less

A cushion suits you best if you want to even out your skin tone in a few minutes and look natural, without a mask-like feel.

  • Normal, dry and combination skin. On drier areas a liquid formula looks softer than powder.
  • Mature skin – as long as you apply it thinly (more in the section on mature skin).
  • Quick everyday makeup, when you don’t want to hunt for or carry a separate brush: the puff is already in the compact.
  • Anyone who touches up during the day: the mirror and puff are always together, and the compact takes up little space in your bag.

When a cushion may not be the best match – and what helps

Very oily skin. A dewier finish on oily skin can start to shine sooner. Apply a thinner layer, lightly set your T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with powder, and during the day blot the shine with a tissue first, then touch up.

You need a lot of coverage. If you want to cover strong pigmentation, marked redness or dark circles, a cushion alone may not be enough, and a thick layer often looks heavy. Start with a thin layer all over, then spot-conceal the rest: you will find how in our guide on how to use concealer. If your skin is fair or medium and you want a formula you can build up to more coverage, take a look at the LUMIMI colour-changing foundation – its shade adjusts to fair and medium skin tones as you apply it.

Very dry, flaky skin. If you rub with the puff, flakes only become more visible. Apply moisturiser before makeup, wait for it to sink in, and only press the foundation on.

Important

LUMIMI cushion foundation contains fragrance. If your skin is sensitive, try it on a small area first. If you have a skin condition, rash or inflammation, talk to your doctor about which makeup to use.

How to use cushion foundation: 5 steps

Apply cushion foundation to prepped skin in thin layers, pressing the puff from the centre of your face outwards. Once you get the hang of it, the whole thing takes 2–3 minutes.

  1. Prep your skinCleanse and apply your usual moisturiser, plus sunscreen in the morning. Wait 3–5 minutes for it to absorb, otherwise the foundation will slide and go patchy.
  2. Pick up the productOpen the compact, lift the inner lid and press the puff lightly into the cushion once or twice. Start with less – you can always add more.

One or two light presses are enough – don’t push down to the bottom.
  3. Pat from the centre outwardsStart with your cheeks, nose, forehead and chin, then blend towards the hairline and jaw. Press the puff briefly and lift – don’t rub, as rubbing leaves the product in streaks.

Short presses spread foundation more evenly than swiping.
  4. Build up only where neededIf redness or uneven areas still show, wait a minute and press a second thin layer onto just those spots. Two thin layers look more natural than one thick one.
  5. Finish the under-eyes and edgesFor the under-eye area and around the nostrils, what’s left on the puff is enough. You can lightly set an oilier T-zone with powder. When you’re done, close both lids tightly.
Tip

For a lighter, sheerer layer, pick up less product and don’t press the puff too hard. When the product runs out, insert the spare 15 g refill that comes in the pack.

How to choose your cushion foundation shade

Choose your cushion shade by your jawline and neck, and check it in daylight – not by how the product looks in the compact.

LUMIMI cushion foundation comes in two shades: Bare Natural (lighter) and Soft Bronze (deeper). Its colour doesn’t adapt to your skin, so pick the one closest to your tone.

  • Test on your jawline. Apply a stripe where your face meets your neck. The right shade simply disappears.
  • Look by a window. Bathroom and shop lighting distort colour; daylight shows how others will see your makeup.
  • Wait 5 minutes. Some foundations darken slightly on the skin, so don’t judge the colour straight away.
  • Spot the mistake. A shade that is too light makes your face look greyish and powdery; one that is too dark leaves a visible line at the neck.
Tip

If you tan in summer and your skin gets much lighter in winter, you may need both shades: Soft Bronze in the warmer months, Bare Natural in the colder ones. If your skin is very fair, compare it with the colour-changing foundation too.

Cushion foundation for mature skin: how to stop it settling into lines

Cushion foundation works on mature skin if the layer is thin, the skin is well moisturised beforehand and the product is pressed on, not swiped.

On mature skin, less product usually means a better result.
  • Moisturise before makeup. Apply your cream 5 minutes before the cushion – otherwise foundation can catch on dry patches and look uneven.
  • Use less than you think you need. One light press is often enough for half the face.
  • Go sparingly around lines. Around the eyes and along the lines from nose to mouth, use only what’s left on the puff. If foundation has gathered in fine lines, gently pat away the excess with a clean part of the puff.
  • Powder only where you shine. On the cheeks and under the eyes, powder shows in lines more than the foundation itself.
  • Cover in spots. Pigmentation and dark circles are better covered with a drop of concealer than with a thicker layer all over.

How to care for your cushion puff and replace the refill

Wash the puff regularly and close the compact tightly after every use – the cushion dries out more slowly and less grime builds up on the puff.

  • Wash often and gently. If you wear makeup every day, wash the puff a few times a week, and more often if you have breakouts. Wash it in lukewarm water with mild soap or face cleanser until the water runs clear, then squeeze it between your palms without wringing. Wash only the puff – never the foundation-soaked cushion.
  • Air-dry it. Leave it on a clean towel somewhere airy, not on a radiator. Put it back in the compact only when completely dry.
  • While it dries, apply with clean fingers or a dense brush for liquid products – see which ones work for foundation in our guide to makeup brushes.
  • Don’t share your puff and don’t leave the compact open – the cushion dries out faster.
  • Respect the shelf life. Look for the open-jar symbol with a number and the letter M on the packaging – that is how many months you can use the product after opening.

The refill

The LUMIMI pack contains the cushion (15 g), already in the compact, and an extra 15 g refill. When the first one runs out, take out the empty refill and pop in the new one – you keep the same compact with its mirror.

LUMIMI cushion foundation: ingredients and who it is for

LUMIMI cushion foundation is a compact with a mirror, a puff and two 15 g refills; one refill gives roughly 50 applications, depending on how much you use each time. It is made for anyone who wants quick, natural-looking makeup and easy touch-ups during the day.

It contains hydrating ingredients – glycerin, hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate – as well as panthenol (provitamin B5), vitamin E and plant extracts: oat, centella, aloe vera, chrysanthemum and Stephania. Worth knowing: LUMIMI cushion foundation is not a sun protection (SPF) product. In the morning, apply your own sunscreen first and put the cushion on once it has absorbed. Cushion foundation reviews – what to look for

When you read cushion foundation reviews, look for context rather than praise: the reviewer’s skin type and age, which shade she chose and what her skin tone is, how the makeup looks after a few hours, whether it highlights dry patches and whether the scent bothers her. That tells you more than an overall score. You can read about LUMIMI customers’ experiences on our reviews page.

Cushion foundation FAQ

Is a cushion the same as powder?

No. A cushion is a liquid foundation held in a porous cushion, while powder is dry. It is sometimes called “cushion powder” only because the compact looks like a powder compact.

Can you layer cushion foundation?

Yes. After the first layer, wait a minute and press a second thin layer only where you need more coverage. There is no need to cover the whole face thickly – it makes makeup look heavier.

How long does a cushion foundation last?

One 15 g refill gives roughly 50 applications, but that is only a guide – it depends on how much product you pick up each time.

Do you need powder over a cushion?

Not necessarily. Normal and dry skin usually doesn’t need powder, while oily or combination skin benefits from lightly powdering the T-zone. On mature skin, use as little powder as possible, especially under the eyes.

Does cushion foundation have SPF?

LUMIMI cushion foundation is not a sun protection (SPF) product and doesn’t replace sunscreen. In the morning, apply your own sunscreen first and put the cushion on once it has absorbed.

How do you clean a cushion puff?

Wash it in lukewarm water with mild soap, squeeze it between your palms and let it air-dry. If you wear makeup daily, wash it a few times a week, and more often if you have breakouts. Put only a completely dry puff back in the compact, and never wash the foundation-soaked cushion itself.

Can you use a cushion for touch-ups during the day?

Yes, that is exactly what it is handy for. Blot any shine with a tissue first, then press a thin layer onto just the areas that need it – that way your makeup won’t get heavy.
